Autonomous Vessel Engineering

Engineering Drones That Can Cross Oceans

Designing for Endurance, Reliability, and the Unknown

DMS helps drone operators and developers engineer vessels that are built to survive the open ocean, operate for months at a time, and complete missions without anyone onboard.

From launching research drones and environmental monitoring ASVs to developing communications relays, we’ll help you engineer for success.

  • Powered for the Long Haul

Power management is the biggest hurdle in autonomous vessel engineering. DMS specializes in balancing endurance, efficiency, and redundancy, while also bringing the skill to incorporate renewable energy for nearly unlimited operation.

  • Built for Unforgiving Waters

We engineer vessels with advanced self-righting capabilities, protective antenna housing, and watertight resilience to ensure your platform stays operational, even in the harshest conditions.

  • Real Designs for Real Missions

Every choice we make, from hull shape to component layout, is made with your mission in mind. That includes building strong, impact-ready hulls that can take a beating.

Build Smarter, Build With DMS

If your drone’s going to spend months at sea, it better be built by someone who knows how the ocean works. That’s where we come in. Get in touch with the team at DMS and tap into our expertise today.

Push the Limits and Collaborate With Experts

We love working on cutting-edge platforms. The more unique, the better. However, while modern technology is great, it’ll only get you so far on its own. What really sets us apart is our mindset.

We collaborate closely with your team to explore ideas, test assumptions, and execute autonomous vessel engineering that actually serves your goals. Whether you’re inventing a new class of ASV or scaling up an existing platform, we’re here to make it happen.

Gradient Quote

“I am an old timer. I should be a retired yacht designer / naval architect / professional engineer. With a backlog of projects and no time to get caught up on using my GHS software, I needed some help. I heard from a friend that Nicholas Barczak, P.E. of DMS, had some instructional videos on YouTube. While excellent, they still didn’t solve my backlog, so I hired Nick to run my 40′ pontoon small passenger stability calculations. Nick knocked it out in a little over a week, and 12 days later, we had a USCG MSC Stability Letter!”

Autonomous Vessel Engineering Case Study

The Problem

Our Client needed a long-endurance, storm-capable survey drone. One that could survive months in open water, deploy buoys, and continue collecting sonar data no matter the conditions. The market was full of designs, but they lacked the durability or reliability required for real missions.

They needed something stronger, smarter, and far more self-reliant.

The Solution

DMS engineered a fully powered, nearly unsinkable autonomous surface vessel (ASV) with layered redundancies and extreme survivability features. We delivered a design that included self-righting capability, flood-resilient systems, a protected mission bay, and smart power architecture with redundant batteries and propulsion backups.

Using advanced stability and seakeeping analysis, we ensured the drone could remain operational, even when other vessels would be sidelined by weather.

The Results

The drone exceeded expectations: it can operate for over 80 days per mission and has a potential range of more than 9,500 nautical miles—enough to cross the Pacific and back on a single tank!

Minimal roll motion ensured reliable sonar data collection, and buyers gained confidence thanks to the DMS-led engineering proof. Best of all, the Client only paid for specialized services where they needed support, keeping costs low while maximizing value.

We work with a wide range of unmanned surface vehicles, including compact research platforms, endurance-focused ocean drones, and mission-specific vessels built for flexibility and durability.

Yup! We’ve supported survey drone design for clients who need to collect sonar, radar, or weather data over long missions. We optimize for both data collection and survivability, so your platform keeps working even when conditions don’t cooperate.

Most of our clients already have their own automation systems in mind. Our job is to design a vessel that can support those systems in real-world conditions. That means building for endurance, redundancy, and survivability, so your platform stays operational for weeks or months at sea. You supply the brains, and we build the body to keep it going.
